George Clooney in The W Magazine 2013 Art Issue

The W Magazine 2013 Art Issue has two of my favorite things – George Clooney and polka dots. And in the same photo! The artist who created Polka Dot George Clooney, is the 84-year old Japanese Yayoi Kusama who is famous for her signature polka-dotted patterns. Kusama’s paintings, sculptures and video-art have been exhibited all over the world. About covering George Clooney in polka dots Kusama says ‘My idea is to send the message of ‘love forever’ to all the people in the world through the polka dots, which are all about the universe and human beings and living things. Your sex, being famous, being a star has nothing to do with it.’ Message received, Ms. Kusama! These photos might make your head spin, but they are gorgeous!

In the W Magazine article ‘Catching up with George Clooney’ Clooney talks about his new movie ‘The Monuments Men’ – a movie that he co-produced, co-wrote and directed. ‘The Monuments Men’ tells a true story about a group of museum directors, curators and art historians who during the World War II joined forces to rescue art Hilter stole. It will hit the theaters next spring and I will be there to see it. In the meantime check out the trailer here.

It’s not only the fab Yayoi Kusama who used George Clooney as their muse in this W Magazine Art Issue. Tracey Emin (below), Catherine Opie (below), Marilyn Minter and Karen Kilimnik also created portraits of George. Check out all of them here.
Tracey Emin creates text portraits which are based on the answers of her standard questionnaire she asks her subjects to complete. Emin says that Clooney’s answers made her ‘..burst out laughing. They were so candid. So I thought about how strong his smile is, because he’s definitely funny.’
Catherine Opie on the other hand has Clooney standing barefoot against a black background, which according to the artist creates more narrative mystery as the viewers can load their own sense of story onto the image. Opie says that she didn’t want just a stare from George Clooney; it had to be a human moment. As ultimately she is interested in the silence that portraits can offer.

In the magazine interview George Clooney confesses that his childhood crush was the elegant Audrey Hepburn in ‘Roman Holiday’ and the eternally beautiful Grace Kelly in ‘To Catch A Thief’. He also answers coyly Tracey Emin’s question of ‘Who is or was the greatest love of your life?’ with ‘I have not met her yet…’ Really, George?! Well, now – I am available! So George, I love polka dots (even though you might not), laughing and … Nespresso. You can find my email on the contact page, so just drop me a line – anytime…
