Georgia Medical Society Honors Health Care Heroes

Donald J. Palmisano, pictured with Edmund R. Donoghue, M.D., CaRita Connor and E. Daniel DeLoach, M.D. of the Georgia Medical Society, served as the guest speaker to the company’s annual Health Care Heroes Award banquet earlier this past week.

Even the Georgia Medical Society held its annual Health Care Heroes Awards banquet this week honoring individuals in the area who were nominated because of their many healthcare tasks. These individuals were nominated by individuals and organizations who felt they had concerned themselves in making healthcare better.

The categories and winners of this year were:

Health Care Innovations: An individual or a company who has implemented and designated a new program that has enhanced the standard of life for a portion of our area.

  • The Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program at Memorial University Medical Center
  • The iROUND Program in St. Joseph’s/Candler
  • Carol Greenberg, president, Morningstar Cultural Arts Group

Health Care Education: An individual or a company that has sponsored or conducted educational activities that have enhanced the quality of life for a portion of our area.

  • Diane Youmans, MSN, R.N. Coordinator, Perinatal Bereavement Program at Memorial University Medical Center
  • African American Health Information and Resource Center, Healthy Kids Cooking Camps at St. Joseph’s/Candler
  • Get Your Rear in Gear 5 K Walk/Run — St. Joseph’s/Candler

Community Outreach: Organizations that have taken Health Care initiatives beyond the confines of their own institutions and to the community at large having demonstrable improvements in the standard of life.

  • Mercy Volunteer Program — St. Joseph’s/Candler
  • Angels of Mercy Danny’s Brown Box Campaign — St. Joseph’s/Candler
  • Mark Robertson for The River’s Christmas Wish — iHeart Radio

Institutions/Organizations: Member of management, governance, or personnel who enhance the standard of life from the business, association or the area, from the initiatives developed by the institution.

Allied Health Professionals: Health care professionals, who aren’t doctors who have made substantial contributions to healthcare locally, above and beyond the expectations of their jobs.

Physicians Lifetime Achievement: A doctor who is retired and whose contributions to the welfare of the community appreciably exceed his actions as a practicing doctor.
