…get All Hands on Deck

Ahoy, mateys! And welcome to another International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Afore we set off on this year’s voyage, let me take a moment of yer time to tell ye, landlubbers, how much I appreciate the inclusiveness of this swashbuckling day.

Because if they were nothing else, pirates were global. And in this the age o’ Twitter, it seems silly to call these days “National [Instert Food Here] Day.” Who’s nation? I ask ye.

Pirates, for all of thar flaws (and they had more than a few), had a code they lived by, and that included (assuming you weren’t a woman or a child) just about anyone as long as yer useful.

There are more than a few lessons to be learned from the Pirate’s Code.

For starters, every man (emphasis on man here) had an equal say on ship matters, when put to a vote, and an equal part in the loot.

And curfews (at 8 PM!) were respected. Because even pirates need some shut-aye.

Violence, stealin’ from yer shipmates, and gambling were all frowned upon aboard the ship…and disagreements were settled swiftly.

[Fun fact: There’s no historical evidence that walking the plank was actually a “thing.”]

Modern human rights violations aside (and a few other things), this International Talk Like a Pirate Day, perhaps we can all learn a thing or two from these plunderers of yore in addition to their dialect. Arrrr not.

…bi-daily smile…
