Getting Your Little One's Nursery Ready For the Big Day
The big day is quickly approaching! It’s time to get the little one’s nursery ready and you’re wondering where to begin. You want this room to be extra special! Your new baby's comfort is very important to you, and you know that you’ll also be spending a great deal of time in the nursery. So, let’s start with a few ideas to help you prepare for this very special occasion… in style!
At birth, your baby will be able to see black and white with shades of gray. Very quickly his or her sight will develop. Awareness of pastel colors develops along with responsiveness to red. Consider bright and cheery color combinations, as well as more subtle shades of pink, blue, green, and yellow… all especially lovely additions!

If you paint the nursery you will want to consider the amount of direct sunlight the room has. Select shades and colors that will offset direct light. For example, a bright room may need to be toned down, while a darker room will usually look best with lighter tones.
Wallpaper makes a timeless addition to the nursery and a terrific way to add color, style, and durability to the walls. A basic style with stripes and subtle designs will easily transition to a bedroom for an older child, as your baby develops. If wallpaper isn’t right for you, you might consider painting large stripes, or a mural, on a nursery wall. You can add a more sophisticated look by enlarging your child’s initials to add a classic decorative monogram in honor of your infant’s arrival.
Everything in the room can (and probably will) become soiled at some point, so choose furniture and accessories that are easy to clean and will withstand the test of time. Scatter rugs will protect the floor when placed over wall-to-wall carpeting or hardwood floors. Soft lighting is wonderful for midnight visits, so you may want to install a dimmer switch and nightlights.

You’ll be spending a good deal of time in the nursery; a comfortable chair, and a day-bed are both good investments. A single bed will easily adapt to your child’s needs as he or she grows. Older children will appreciate having a special place to relax and to feel included in the excitement the newborn brings to your home.
The more storage the better, especially when placed next to the changing table. Both safety and accessibility are of major importance, so position the changing-table against the wall and away from the window. (If the changing table is in front of a window, apply safety rails for protection.) Keep diapers and supplies within reach. Plastic containers for powder and diaper cream are useful and easy to clean. Open baskets and shelves are practical and useful. Additional storage space, within reach of the changing table and crib, is great for storing books, stuffed animals, and toys.
A well designed nursery will grow with your child. When you get your little one's nursery ready for the big day - choose colors, furniture, and accessories that will quickly adapt to the developing needs of your new baby and your growing family.
