Ginger and Rosa

Desperate to find a new movie to watch I visited moviefone’s website and just started browsing. There are times in the year when mainstream movies come out that I would actually want to see, but it’s just not that time of year now.

Well, that’s how I found Ginger and Rosa, a British drama taking place in London in the 1960s. Two girls, who have practically grown up together find themselves in a world where there’s a nuclear threat and a sexual revolution. Rosa lives with her mom and siblings and is our typical ‘wild child’: smoking, drinking, partying, kissing boys. Ginger lives with her ex-painter mother and her writer father and likes to write (poetry). The girls first get caught up together in the ban-the-bomb activism, encouraged by Ginger’s dad Roland, but soon Rosa’s interests shift and the girls’ relationship crumbles.

At the end of the film I was wondering how this story could have possibly lasted 90 minutes. It seemed like so little had happened in the end. But, I was definitely impressed with Elle Fanning, who portrayed Ginger in this film.  Considering she was only 14 when filming, she shows just the right (amount of) emotion at every single turn which makes her character completely believable.
