Girlfriends

The old adage goes that "birds of a feather, flock together".

Maybe.

But if you really look around, you'll find more examples of peaceful co-existence.

The variety of people we meet right from the time we begin school in the diverse classroom.

How interesting it is to see it proved over and over again that opposites attract!

I fondly think of my closest friends. We are practically like chalk and cheese. (On an aside, we've eaten both! Ewwh.)

In some cases we hit it off from the word "go!" but in many others, we did not hit it off right away. Still, as Universe intended it, situations arose that led us to bond-as if to make up for lost time-and all is well.

I like to think of each one of us as part of a jigsaw puzzle-just waiting to fit into each other's groove, seamlessly.

I feel fortunate to have friends I've known for decades-for most of my life-and I am grateful that we are in touch regularly.

Sure, we fight and argue and chew our brains off sometimes, but overall, there's always the undercurrent of unconditional love-unshakable, permanent and, like a giant hug just waiting to enclose me in its warmth.

The circles of women around us weave invisible nets of love that carry us when we're weak and sing with us when we are strong. - Sark

So anyway, sometime last year, I came across this beautiful piece about "Girlfriends" in my timeline on Facebook. I connected with Deb, whose page it appeared on, and we had a pleasant conversation. Then I sought her permission to post it here. I was excited when she readily said yes. However, I did not get around to doing it right away.

This morning, I was rummaging through my folders and came across it and immediately felt that warm glow from reading it again and want to share it with you all. It is a lovely passage that speaks to my heart, and speaks about my own girlfriends.

My wish for each one of you is that you have a friend(s) you can share this with.

Enjoy!

As we chart new paths, begin a new journey, or even face life's decisions on our current path, it becomes so very clear that our circle wraps it's loving arms around us tighter and tighter. Those who are closest to us, almost instinctively know just what we need. I have noticed this everyday in my new walk. It is a fabulous feeling, just knowing that you have the love and support of those you hold dear to your heart. How do they become so dear to us? The experiences they have weathered with us creates that. I am so very blessed to have that circle around me. This circle can be comprised of both female and male but I can tell you, the women are the most precious.

Women need other women. They always do. It is a special bond. It is like no other. Our circle, our posse, our tribe, our girlfriends. They become more and more important as we grow older. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, girlfriends are the mainstays of our life.

After almost 50 years of living in this world, here is what I have learned:

Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Love waxes and wanes.
Hearts break.
Careers end.
Jobs come and go.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors.
Men don't call when they say they will.

BUT, girlfriends are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach. When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it for yourself, your girlfriends will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end. Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you. Or come in and carry you out. My friends bless my life! The world wouldn't be the same without them, and neither would I.

When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other. Every day, we need each other still.

My heart overflows with the joy and happiness my circle brings to me. I am forever grateful that God has blessed me with the incredible women in my circle! I truly could not do it alone!

Breathe it in is Deb's personal Facebook blog. It's purpose is to empower with love, inspire through bravery, and heal with the sharing of hearts and lives. Do you have a circle of (girl)friends? Do you tell each other how much you love one another, often?
