…Give and Take

Today saw the United States’ government shut down for the first time in seventeen years.

Not surprisingly, it’s due to the Republican and Democratic party’s inability to work together or strike some sort of compromise.

Now, before you roll your eyes, thinking this is yet another angry rant among millions of other bloggers, here’s some facts (and I’ll try to keep the ranting in check):

Article I, section 8 of the Constitution states that. “the Congress shall have power To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general Welfare of the United States.”

Or to put it in modern-day English — it’s their job to make sure the government is funded.

Yesterday, due to stubbornness and party loyalty (among other things), Congress failed to fulfill this power.

It is a shame, and if it doesn’t make you at least a bit angry then you might want to consider taking a more active approach towards your citizenship.

We have a government that is so concerned about their own personal agendas that they’ve forgotten that the government is supposed to be for the people…as in acting for the people, not stupefying “entertainment” for the people.
