…give Me Five

Happy National High Five Day! This hand-slapping, congratulatory day is traditionally celebrated on the third Thursday of April, because. Yes, that’s the end of the sentence, but don’t worry, there’s more. Prepare yourself for the history of National High Five Day.

The year: 2002. The place: University of Virginia. The activity: Free High Fives and Lemonade in the Quad. It basically snowballed from there.

Here we are 14 years later and the day has a hashtag (#NH5D), a website, an origin story, and raises money for some pretty cool charities. That is the world we live in, the random acts of students can become a hashtagged (don’t tell me this is not a word spellcheck) holiday, and it’s kind of fabulous.

I mean, personally, I’m a fist bump kind of girl, but even I have to admit, when it comes to shared gestures of celebration and victory, the high five is up top.
