OK, to be fair, U2 haven’t really gone anywhere, they are eternal, but last night at the 71st Golden Globe Awards they were not only (in my opinion) the best looking and coolest guys in the room, they were also accepting an award for the first new U2 song in three years. No Ordinary Love, written for the Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom just had no competition in the Best Original Song category. It wasn’t because the other nominees were so bad, it was because the combination of U2 and Nelson Mandela was always going to be unbeatable. U2 have been tireless campaigners for human rights for decades, and partnered with the late great Nelson Mandela on many occasions.
Bono said in his acceptance speech the band drew inspiration from that friendship in writing the song. “This really is personal for us. This man turned our life upside down, right-side up, a man who refused to hate, not because he didn’t have rage or anger or these things, but that he thought love would do a better job. We wrote a love song because it kind of is what is extraordinary about the film — it is kind of a dysfunctional love story. That’s why you should see this film. You know about the global statesman, you don’t know about the man, that’s why you should see this film.”
The song, which is quite low-key by U2 standards, starts off gently, then steadily rolls onto Bono’s soaring vocals. But the focus remains squarely on the beautiful message.; “We cannot reach any higher if we can’t deal with ordinary love.”

Next stop for U2 is a new album they have been working with producer Danger Mouse, slated for release is April, and the Oscar nominations will be announced this Thursday (January 16th). I dare say there might be more golden statues on offer for U2 this year.
