While I sit down to write my blog today, all that I can think of is the master deducer, Sherlock Holmes.
The first time I met him was in an English Class in 5 or 6 standard. While I had met several other remarkable men, this man was different. He had a certain air about him, which was like nobody else. Within minutes he would he would tell us the history, present and the possible future of a stranger. Deductive reasoning, is what he would call it. The first time I saw him in action, I was quite confused. Till then I had only met the humble heroes and here was a man who was proud of his intellect and wouldn't hesitate to look down upon others or so I thought. I was slightly taken aback by his arrogance but slowly he succeeded in charming me. From his antics with Watson, when sometimes I would feel sorry for the poor doctor to the way he would end up in the most unexpected places. Oh, I was with him through out. It was only the first meeting, after which I instantly fell in love with him and followed him through all his adventures. Whether it was when he went of wild "goose" chase in finding the blue carbuncle or solved the mystery of Hound of Baskervilles I traveled with him throughout. When I knew Holmes was dead, I couldn't believe myself I had a strong conviction that he would return and he did, I was right. Traveling with him, I tried to learn his techniques. I would attempt guessing the background of the people by looking at them. Ofcourse I was no where comparable to him but I tried never the less.
This is my journey with Sherlock, there will be million others like this. Such is the beauty of the character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In many cases the title "Sir" didn't make sense to me but here it definitely did. To my mind there has never been and will never be any other character which has captivated the world for so long. From the time it first appeared in the strand magazine to the time when the author felt threatened by the character and intended to stop it, to people taking to the roads with black arm bands to protest Sherlock's death- all of it is legendary. Nothing else can explain me sitting is some corner of India, writing about Holmes who was born 126 years before today.
How can I not mention Watson, the man who is as much in awe of Sherlock as we are. If not for him, how would the world know about Holmes.
From the day Sherlock was born to today, a detective is always drawn from him. If he/she is not inspired by him then it falls short somewhere. BBC made it, CBS made it, Bollywood tried to emulate it, Hollywood made it but we still haven't had enough of him.
When any literary work is adapted to film, the actors generally add to the character i.e., from then on we began to picture the actor whenever we think of the character. But in case of Sherlock Holmes no actor could leave his imprint on him. The character continues to live on untouched by time. Whether it was 20th century or today it continues to keep us spell bound.
While I end this post Sherlock would say " If you are reading this post and it is late in the night, then you are either suffering from addiction to the internet or if you are married then you probably do not want to face your spouse or you are utterly bored...." When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable is the truth.
"Well Watson, You know my methods.."
