Guardiola’s Last Game as Coach Ends in Draw

Posted on the 13 May 2012 by Stizzard

It was Pep Guardiola’s last game for Barca last night and even though he didn’t go out on a win, it was enough to seal his place in footballing history. The Catalan giants will never forget him that’s for sure.

Barca travelled to meet Betis and although Barca, under Guardiola, have never beaten Betis under Pepe Mel, both teams were up to change the record books. Sergio Busquets made it one nothing for the Catalans with a header that the Betis keeper had no chance with and then Rubén Castro put two away for the home side within four minutes to put Barcelona on the rack.

Dani Alves got sent off just after half time for two yellow cards and Argentine maestro Messi was unable to add to his tally of 50 goals this season. Cristiano Ronaldo has an opportunity to try and catch Messi’s total but it doesn’t look like happening unless a miracle takes place :-)

Barca ends this season with 91 points which is an awesome total in its own right but not quite enough to catch Real Madrid this year who look like breaking 100 points on Sunday against Mallorca.

Towards the end of the game it was beginning to look ominous for the Catalan giants with Messi hitting the post and Iniesta coming alive in the last quarter of an hour. It all looked too late until Seydou Keita stepped up to the plate and scored with a header at the far post.

That was it and it was the end of the season for Barca and the end of one of the most memorable footballing periods ever seen. Guardiola, the guy from Santpedor signed off with a draw. Ok, so it wasn’t quite the win he expected, but he’s been so used to winning throughout his four year stay at this great club that it didn’t really matter anyway.

Guardiola didn’t have much to say regarding his future or the fact that it was his last game at the press conference after the game. He did however, have more to say regarding the future of Dani Alves who is rumoured to be leaving in the summer.

Pep said:

“All future issues with the club are not dependent on me. Dani is an irreplaceable player and from my point of view, Dani has given what most people can’t. Dani has been a key player over the years and hopefully he’ll remain one.”

Guardiola was again sparse with his comments to the press but alluding to Aitor Karanka’s comments last week he said:

“I do not think the League will miss me, it existed before me and will continue after me.”
