Guest Post: Top Ways to Reduce Your Home Fuel Bill

Posted on the 03 July 2013 by Ellenarnison @Ellen27

We all know that heating, hot water and electricity are essential for day-to-day life but we never like the look of the bill that drops onto our doormat once a quarter/once a month. While the utilities are unavoidable but what you pay for your energy can be reduced with a few handy tips and pointers.

Check the Boiler

If you have an older model of boiler in your home, it may be time for an upgrade. While it may still work effectively, newer versions are by far more energy efficient. Shop around and consider British Gas boiler care to help cover the cost of any services and repairs. Choose a new boiler that has the Energy Saving Recommended sticker emblazoned on it to make sure you have the most efficient model for your home.

You can purchase boilers from British Gas or other energy providers and while a new one isn’t essential, it can really help to improve the fuel bill in many homes.

Check the Thermostat

Do you really need your thermostat to be at 20 degrees during the summer? Turn it down by 1 or 2 degrees and you can save a huge amount of money each month.

If you do get a little chilly of an evening, reach for a blanket and snuggle rather than automatically heading for the heating controls.

Make sure that your heating and hot water is only on when required. While hot water is handy to be on throughout the day, you don’t need the heating to be on 24/7 – especially when you’re not even in the house!

Increase your Insulation

You don’t have to call the professionals to fit loft insulation and it’s a fairly cheap job. Upgrade your loft insulation so that it meets with the recommendations (270mm) and you could save up to £150 a year.

Check whether you’re eligible for money off cavity wall insulation too – every home in the UK is eligible to at least 50% off their insulation. Contact ACT for more information.

Combine these changes with smaller habitual ones, such as turning lights off when not in use, washing laundry on cooler settings and avoid the use of your tumble drier in dry weather and you will see positive changes in your fuel bill in no time.
