Harlem Shake

Posted on the 13 February 2013 by Jhouser123 @jhouser123

It seems like these days a new Internet craze takes over every week or so. Whether it be an angry faced cat, auto tuning news footage, or a Korean guy with a catchy tune, trends on the Internet change more often then a hipster’s Facebook cover photo.

The latest craze comes straight out of Harlem, and if you haven’t seen the videos, I must say the first 10 you watch are pretty great. It is almost reminiscent of the flash mobs that became wildly popular from 2003 through 2010. Named for the song “Harlem Shake” by the electronic artist Baauer, the Harlem Shake videos are one of the most popular video series on YouTube today.

With a huge number of videos made in response to the original by everyone from school groups to offices, it is obvious that these videos, often lasting less than a minute, are one of the most popular things on the Internet right now, but how much sticking power do they have? When flash mobs made their debut and started becoming publicized and put all over the Internet, they were extremely popular for over 5 years, which is an amazingly long period of time. These days if a trend like the Harlem Shake lasts more than 2 weeks it is an amazing feat.

Like every other trend these days, something as simple as the Harlem Shake will join all the other things out of Harlem to die off in the past: The Harlem Globetrotters… umm… Well that is about all I can think of off the top of my head. Although Harlem might not be famous for much, but right now everyone knows it’s name. Every place gets it’s day, and today is Harlem’s time to shine. Maybe we will hear of them again in the next 10 years.
