Fans of film and television, the big night is finally here! It’s mere hours until the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards begin, and that means one thing here at 2WC—predictions.
Not to put too much pressure on these conjectures, but their accuracy may set the tone for the whole awards season. The winners tonight, while not guaranteed an Oscar victory, do move up in the realm of likelihood. So, of course we take these very seriously.
In years past, we have hedged our bets a little. We’ve proposed who we want to win, and who we think will win. This year, we get one guess, and of course allow ourselves plenty of explanation to include our personal favorites as well…blogger’s prerogative.
Still, a blog can only contain so much, it has to end somewhere, which is why we’ll also be live-tweeting the Golden Globes this evening. So enjoy our predictions below, and check back in tonight as we comment on victories, defeats, and just about everything else. It’s Hollywood’s greatest party and we have a thing or two to say about it, so check in here: 2WC on Twitter.
For now feel free to check out our four cents and share your own predictions:
Drama
Best Motion Picture
- Zer: “Lincoln” — This movie is Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis at their best, that’s a pretty hard combination to beat. While an upset isn’t impossible, it’s very unlikely that any of the other nominees will take this award.
- Stephanie: “Lincoln” — I’ve got to go with the “Great Emancipator” on this one. With Mr. Day-Lewis and Spielberg at the helm of this one, and the powerful story it spins, it seems unlikely that anyone else will walk away with this top prize tonight.
Best Television Series
- Zer: “Downton Abbey” — I realize this is a bit of a risky choice, it is going up against “Homeland.” But I stand by the fact that it is the best show in this category and should win.
- Stephanie: “Downton Abbey” — It’s going to come down to this or “Homeland.” It’s past vs. present, America vs. England, and Showtime vs. PBS. So, sorry present, America, and Showtime, but I’m sticking with the Abbey on this one. It’s a fantastic show.
Comedy
Best Motion Picture
- Zer: “Les Misérables” — Somehow Tom Hooper managed to take this musical juggernaut and turn it into a film that maintains what we all love about the original, but allows enough change that it works in this different format. I will be shocked if it doesn’t win.
- Stephanie: “Les Misérables” — Tragically (and ironically) but deservedly, the one drama in the comedy category will take this top prize tonight. An amazing feat has been accomplished with this film, and it deserves to be recognized, since an Oscar seems less than likely (but welcome).
Best Television Series
- Zer: “Girls” — This fresh and funny HBO series is sure to win this category thanks to its creator and star, Lena Dunham.
- Stephanie: “Girls” — I do first have to thank the Golden Globes for including the Emmy-slighted “Smash” in this category, but “Girls” will win, and it should. What the 26-year-old Lena Dunham has created is a painfully honest, but light-hearted look at what it means to be a 20 something young woman today. It’s refreshing, touching, and completely deserving of this win.
Miscellaneous
Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
- Zer: “Political Animals” — Okay, so I’ve only seen two and a half of the nominated series in this category, but “Political Animals” was a pleasant surprise courtesy of the USA Network. It was relevant and entertaining, plus it made for a nice break from the actual political circus taking place at the same time.
- Stephanie: “The Girl” — I’m picking the Brits again. I admit, it’s partially because this is the only one I’ve seen in its entirety. However, like the works of Hitchcock himself this movie balances horror and intrigue beautifully. Even at its most repulsive moments, it’s truly difficult to look away. Toby Jones is brilliantly brilliant and unnerving at moments as Hitchcock and Sienna Miller is heartbreakingly defiant and courageous as Tippi Hedren.
- Zer: “Brave” — Honestly, this category could go to any of five nominated films, except “Hotel Transylvania” (really?). While “Brave” is not the best Pixar film of all time, it is the first to have a heroine, which gives it a slight advantage over its fellow nominees.
- Stephanie: “Wreck-It Ralph” — In the absence of the horribly slighted “ParaNorman” it came down to “Brave” and “Wreck-It Ralph” for me. While I admit that not picking the first Pixar heroine was difficult, “Wreck-It Ralph” stood out to me as a beautiful blend of kid-friendly humor, intelligent storytelling, and Disney magic.
