…Hear The People Sing

It’s finally here, 2WC’s final installment of our countdown to “Les Misérables.”  Sorry, but you’ll have to make it through the final day on your own.  Hopefully Christmas Eve will help to create a distraction.

Today, we’re discussing the fire that drives the revolution—the impassioned, idealistic, revolutionary students.

With all of the love stories, and tragic circumstances going on in this plot, it may be hard to believe, but the underlying moment in history is a French revolution (not the French Revolution, that came a few years later).

Their barricade is a character all its own, and their passion drives the momentum of this show.  Led by the flag waving Enjolras (you know the one) and his friend Marius (yes, Cossette’s Marius), their’s is a story of the idealistic qualities of youth.

They are out to change the world for the better, and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for what they believe in, at least in theory.  Regardless, theirs, like that of so many others in this story, is a tragic tale.

On that note, we’d like to leave you with the students’ own words.  Please do not use these as an invitation to sing along with the film.  There will be plenty of time for that when the film comes out on dvd:

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
