In a world where news is at our fingertips, it has taken a day to bring myself to read the cycle of reports that fill my news feed. As a teacher and a mother, hearing the news about the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and seeing the images of the innocent victims just breaks my heart. How could someone do this?
Teacher, Jessica Soto hid her students in a closet after she heard what was happening in a nearby classroom. She told the shooter they’d gone to gym. She died for them. Imagining this situation is utterly terrifying.

It’s impossible not to feel emotional about this tragedy. I pray that these innocent victims, along with all those before them, have not lost their lives in vain. Surely it’s time for America to change it’s gun culture and call for tighter controls on firearms. I was never a big John Howard fan but I’ll give him credit for the gun buy back scheme as it means that we are living in a much safer country today.
“Love is our most unifying and empowering common spiritual denominator. The more we ignore its potential to bring greater balance and deeper meaning to human existence, the more likely we are to continue to define history as one long inglorious record of man’s inhumanity to man.”
