I have always been fascinated by Hollywood stars. And when I say stars, I don’t mean Angelina Jolie or Tom Cruise, I mean screen legends, the old Hollywood icons. I grew up watching old Hollywood musicals and reading my mother’s old movie magazines from the 1950s. Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood and Ava Gardner, those were my screen goddesses. Hollywood in Kodachrome is a new book filled with rare portraits and behind the scenes photos from Hollywood’s golden era the 1940s. Before Kodachrome audiences were used to seeing their stars in black and white images and monochrome. Suddenly Kodachrome film saturated images with color and Hollywood became even more vibrant, glamorous and fabled than before. For the first time Lucille Ball’s hair was fiery red, Gary Cooper’s eyes were dazzling blue and all the beautiful dresses and jewels came to life in vibrant hues. Curated by collector David Wills and designer Stephen Schmidt, the book has over 200 vivid photos, all digitally restored to their original glory. Just look how young and beautiful they all were.
