Hollywood Lets the Cat Out of the Bag – No More Streaming Services

Hollywood Lets the Cat Out of the Bag – No More Streaming ServicesWell, many of us are really not surprised about the fact that Hollywood heavy hitters like Les Moonves of CBS Corporation do not want to collaborate with anyone, including Apple, on developing a video streaming services subscription.  According to CNet.com, Steve Jobs pitched the collaboration idea to Moonves and other leaders within the year before he passed away.  Moonves was sharing his thoughts at the UCLA Entertainment Symposium in Los Angeles and dropped that little tidbit.  And, apparently Moonves was reluctant to disrupt existing revenue streams.  That is good news for Netflix in the short run.  In the long run, if consumers want to send a message to entertainment conglomerates like CBS Corporation that they are tired of funding their lavish lifestyles, I hope they will continue to support Netflix and other services.

As Cnet notes, consumers are very ready to embrace video on demand delivered over the internet for a low monthly subscription rate.  Many people have found how simple it is to access online content by utilizing their gaming console, blu-ray player, or purchasing a streaming media device like Roku or Apple TV.  “But that’s part of the problem.  Many in film and television fear Netflix is teaching consumes to expect unlimited amounts of popular content for the price of a single movie ticket — without the popcorn.”  Cable TV providers are also concerned.  They have been getting away with bundling hundreds of worthless channels together with a handful of channels that consumers actually want, and hanging a very large price tag on it.  Consumers are weary.  Has anyone in Hollywood noted that there is a very serious recession going on that is likely to double-dip?
