Hot In Cleveland

Posted on the 29 June 2013 by Albert Wagner @albertwagner4
No - not the T.V. show.
Recently it has been very hot in Cleveland, Ohio.  Isn't Cleveland known for being so cold? Several days around the 90 degree mark and it was humid with dew points steadily in the 65 - 70 range.  Is God trying to tell us something?
Perhaps.  It is the author's opinion that things happen for some reason, even if we are not aware of it.
So, as these blogs look at things a little differently, the following is speculation about possible reasons a higher power would make it so hot and uncomfortable for the humans he created:
Why So Hot?
1.  To make us aware of our sinfulness.
It is generally agreed in Christianity that if you are not doing something to further the ministry of God's Kingdom, then God will try to get your attention in some way.  Sin involves consequences, and we all sin, according to the Bible.  Some sin is the result of the bad choices humans make.  Perhaps this is a way a higher power conveys this message.
2.  To show our dependence on God.
As humans, we can not just make it cooler.  Something much bigger than humans is at work and is in control, emphasizing there are things people control and things that people do not control.  Humans can not control how hot it is, but they can do things to help themselves.  (Move, hydrate themselves, perform activities in the cool of the day.)
3.  To bring attention to the suffering of others.
Another generally agreed upon statement in Christianity is that humans are all connected spiritually.  When others are suffering it should bother us, also.  The elderly and children are especially vulnerable in the heat.  How often do people check on the elderly near them and ask what they need?
4.  To show things don't last forever (like winter).
Especially in Cleveland, Ohio it often seems like winter will never end.  It is common for it  to snow as baseball games in April.  However, just as duality is mentioned in the book of Genesis (Day and night, hot and cold, good and evil) there is also duality in the nature God created. (It might fluctuate less in some places.)  This is also a reminder that physical life on earth does not last forever.
5.  To bring attention to our health and things like hydration.
Ideally, God wants his creation physically healthy.  It shows the human body is something to take care of.
6.  To show how we treat others is significant.
Heat can make some people more irritable. If someone is irritable to you, do you act the same way in return?  Sometimes people say things they later regret when it is hot and humid.  This puts focus on why we act the ways we do.
Who knows why it is so hot and humid?  The Bible says that God is working and it is a mystery to us how he is working.
There is, however, a bigger plan behind all of it.
This adds meaning to life because:  As people go through the daily motions to survive as human beings it is important to realize that there is much more going on and a bigger purpose.
