House of Cards: The Netflix Original

If you have Netflix, and have seen all the ads lately, then you have probably noticed this new series called House of Cards.  I have to be honest, my love of political thrillers is a shallow one, and my attention span for plots can be quite short some days, but this show is something different entirely.  I must say, I am extremely impressed by what Netflix has done here.  I would credit a director, but considering they went through 6 of them in 13 episodes, I can’t really tell you that any one of these guys did anything crazy genius with the series as a whole.

House of Cards: The Netflix OriginalThe writing team, however, stayed consistent for a majority of the project, and I must say these 8 writers produced an absolutely fantastic product.  I am consistently amazed by this series.  Every other series or movie with a context like this has been a drag, let’s be honest.  Kevin Spacey is doing some of his most amazing acting in his career, every supporting actor is at the top of their game, and the plot is absolutely astounding.

Even though Kevin Spacey is doing some amazing work breaking the 4th wall, speaking directly to the audience, but even though Spacey is no Bob Hope,  Netflix is doing something that is completely revolutionary: they are an internet-based company that produced an original series.  This isn’t the first they have done, but it is by far the best.

It is absolutely groundbreaking for an content streaming company to take such a massive leap into the TV market like they did.  It sets up a whole new president for companies like Hulu, Vudu, CinemaNow, and even Redbox to bring something more to the table.  If Netflix can bring exclusive content to the next level like this, the other companies are in for a massive wake up call if they want to command the market share for much longer.

Does this mean the end for other content streaming services? Absolutely not.  Yes, Hulu has some original content (mostly comedy, news, and a film review show), but never anything as big as House of Cards.  Hulu also offers things that Netflix doesn’t in the form of more recent TV shows and newer episodes.  Overall, it is easy to see that Netflix is not quite in the position to take over the world of streaming movies and TV shows just yet.
