We’ve all been waiting for this moment – when we can see our friends and family once again. It feels like forever since we’ve seen the people closest to us face to face and now, as we are allowed to meet in groups of up to six people in our private gardens, it’s time to start thinking about how safely host a socially distanced garden party to welcome our guests in the best possible way.
Upgrade your outdoor furniture.
First, think of seating. It should be comfortable and allow you and your guests to keep a safe distance. As this article in The Times says, “to hell with chilly, bum-bruising metal benches. When we meet again, let it be on padded outdoor couches.” Comfort is of the essence but this doesn’t mean to compromise on style. When indoors is off limits to people from other households, it’s important to have hand sanitiser at the ready for your guests to use. As Country Living mentions, “if guests are unable to wash their hands with soap and water, make sure you have hand sanitiser gel at the ready. As well as asking them to use it upon arrival, ask guests to use it before eating or when they come into contact close to anyone.”
Be ready for the unpredictable weather.
We know we can’t trust English weather but we still do it. The morning starts out sunny, the weather forecast says it’s going to be a wonderful sunny day and then, out of nowhere, rain starts pouring down. Will this mean your guests need to leave since you can’t go indoors? Not so fast.
Don’t let happen to you and make sure to have shelter from the elements ready. Time and Leisure suggest having a parasol to provide “shelter from both sun and a light shower.” I’m personally a fan of pop-up gazebos, which are easy to use, offer the perfect cover from the rain and sun plus, are super easy to disassemble and store.
Play socially distanced activities.
Oliver Bonas shared a list of fun outdoor activities that are perfect for your next outdoor gathering, from rounders and skittles to hosting a quiz. As the article mentions, “And whilst we might feel all quizzed out after many weeks of zoom sessions, some of the joy has occasionally been lost in bad internet connections and multiple people talking at the same time. Pack your favorite quiz or card game and get people thinking.”
