How to Throw a Minions Party

If you’re a parent of young children, there’s a strong chance that they’re fans of the Minions, the little yellow critters that broke out in a big way in the Despicable Me films and now have their own films and merchandise lines. They’re perfect for kids – cute, vibrant, funny and characterised by what they do, not by any complicated dialog – and they’re perfect to theme birthday parties around.

The basic Minion design features are yellow skin, blue dungarees and big eyes underneath clear goggles, so it’s easy to get creative and incorporate them into everything from games to invitations to party food and make your party a Minions event to remember!InvitesSet the tone for the party with a Minions-themed invitation design. While you could just design one on the computer and Photoshop a couple of Minions into a basic design, think about the text as well as the visuals. Includephrases along the lines of:“Join [birthday boy/girl] on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with the Minions at [address] on [date]”This will increase anticipation levels for the party – it might put you under pressure as the organiser, but you should thrive off that…right?CakesBaked goods are part and parcel of birthday parties, and the Minions lend themselves well to sugar, egg and flour concoctions – if you want to be really creative, you can make a fully-formed Minion including the body, rather than just a 2D face. You just need to be generous (but precise) with the icing – the yellow base layer is easy enough, but the black of the goggle frames and the whites of the eyes are a little more tricky to get right. It’s unlikely that any four-year-olds are going to pull you up on your icing skills, though!

Balloons

The strong base color of the Minions means that half of the work is done as long as you can find the products in the right shade of yellow. It shouldn’t be too difficult to find yellow balloons, and you don’t have to adapt them in any way to include the dungarees and body – just stencil or print and attach Minion eyes onto them using black and white pens and that will do the job. Fill them with helium and try to keep them away from popping little fingers!CupsDepending on the age of the party guests, you might not want to provide cups whose contents could be spilled, but if you’re willing to take the chance then you can buy cheap paper cups to give a Minion makeover to. Again, opt for a yellow base color and then color in the bottom blue and add details to create the dungarees. Remember to add in funny expressions for them (you can stick googly eyes to them if you’re feeling extra-creative) on one side, and then you can line them all up for the first guests to marvel over.GamesYou can adapt any party game so that it includes Minions – why not try changing “Pin The Tail On The Donkey” to “Pin The Eye On The Minion”, or creating a bean bag toss out of a backdrop featuring the Minions? It’s best to keep things as simple as possible given that the players are going to be young, so focus on games that involve physical activity rather than thinking. And while the grownups are tidying…What better way to keep the sleepy partygoers occupied for an hour or two than by rounding off the day with a viewing of the Minions movie itself?
