How to Use Up Stale Bread

Posted on the 21 August 2012 by Meltingmoments

One of my biggest hates is throwing out food. I hate wasted food. HATE HATE HATE it!

I currently have almost a full loaf of wholemeal bread that is really past being used for sandwiches, and I do not want to just throw it in the bin.

So out came my trusty friend Mr Google, and I began the search for things I could make to use it up.

Of course the obvious thing is breadcrumbs. And yes there are a lot of things you can make with breadcrumbs. Such as Meatloaf, crumbed fish or chicken, meatballs or as toppings sprinkled over dishes. Though I wouldn’t use all the breadcrumbs and they would still end up in the bin. Yes I could freeze them, but that’s no fun for now!

Then there’s Croutons, to go in or on soups and salads. But again I wouldn’t use them.

Stuffing also showed it’s face in a lot of the pages I visited but again not what I was after.

This is what Mr Google came at me with:

I found 17 Uses For Stale Bread at WiseBread.  The Delicious Weekend Quiche sounded ideal. I also liked the sound of the Bread Pudding, though my waist line prompted me to move on.

Real Simple told me about a Chocolate Bread Pudding that looked divine, though not what I was after for this stale bread of mine.

Saveur listed some exotic sounding dishes such as Ricotta Crostini with Chestnut Honey and Twice-cooked Tuscan Bread Soup. As well as some sweet teasers like Cream Soaked White bread with Maple Sugar, and Banana and Dark Rum Bread Pudding.

Cooks.com gave me hundreds of different types of Bread Puddings. Seriously, who knew there was so many different ways you could do a bread pudding!

About.com had a list of ways with stale bread in their Frugal living section. And here I found Breakfast Cheese Strata, this I thought hubby would love.

The Woolworths Baby And Toddler Club got me straight away with Little Quiche Cups. These I liked the sound of. Both hubby and B1 and B2 could have these.

So I was sold!

Maybe I have given you some inspiration for using your left over bread rather than feeding it to the waste bin.

Stay tuned for my creations!
