1. Minimise Clutter
Traditional Danish hygge refrains from the Western obsession of buying material goods on mass aka consumerism. With this firmly in mind, it’s widely understood that it’s incredibly difficult to relax and unwind in spaces that are too overwhelming or crowded. So, to make your hygge experience as joyful as possible remove any items that fail to bring you comfort or joy – only keeping furniture and accents that are meaningful to you and your family. I'm a massive fan of Marie Kondo and her 'life-changing magic of tidying' and have implemented a lot of her methods to ensure a clutter-free home.
2. Bring the Outside in
‘Getting back to nature’ is scientifically proven to reduce stress levels, allowing your body to relax and rejuvenate. Imagine bringing the outside in with an enlightening lantern roof extension. Cosy up in your new or revamped extension space with a good book and a steaming mug of hot chocolate surrounded by greenery; embracing hygge couldn’t be easier!
3. Find a Hobby
Doing something you love can bring all kinds of feelings of hygge into your life. More recently I have fallen back in love with embroidery and I haven't picked up a needle and thread since my textiles lessons in school. I couldn't believe how relaxed I felt and the beauty of being able to embroider more creatively than I ever had before. I have always drawn and painted and I have written about the benefits of art and how it can be a useful tool for mindfulness but embroidery is something I definitely want to explore more in 2019.
4. Take a hygge holiday
This year we're are ditching the traditional holiday by the pool and we're going to be exploring slightly cooler climates. In March we're off to Stockholm a city I have been longing to visit for so long. I'm imagining cosying up in coffee shops and browsing art galleries. Why not try something different too?
I would love to hear if you're going to bring hygge into 2019, leave your thoughts in the comments below.
