I'm Getting Used To This

Life is good at Station 7. I showed up to work today fully expecting to get sent out. We were starting with 8 at the station on the roster, that's a full four on Engine 7 and four on Ladder 7 (which never happens), and it was my turn to be first out, which means if another station was short a man because of someone calling in sick or whatever then i'd be the guy that would go fill their spot. Well, someone did call in at another station, but the spot needing to be filled was on an ambulance.
"See ya later, Salgado."
Poor guy. See even though Salgado was second out and I was first out, the difference here is that Salgado can still ride an ambulance. I would've gone if i could, but im not gonna lie, it's good to be done. He got sent out to ride a really slow unit anyway, Medic 2, so it's all good. While he took off to 2s, here at home we started off the shift at the shop. Engine 7's brake light had turned on yesterday so we headed over there for what we hoped would be a quick fix. (It was) Got to see Bruce and Bonura who were on Medic 9 and passing thru to get a light fixed. "So how is it being off the box?" Man I try to play it down and not rub it in, but I'm pretty sure everyone call tell I'm in heaven from the neverending smile on my face ;)
We've had a good shift so far. Thursday is Truck Day so i worked with Zeller and Jeff greasing up the levers on the pump panel (shown left) and doing some maintenance and cleaning under the cab (yeah I basically watched). We had delicious burgers for lunch, and right on the last bite the tones go off and we're getting a call for a fire in someone's backyard. You know how hard it is to finish chewing a mouthful of burger when you've got an air pack mask on? I knew I shouldn't have stuffed in that last bite. It was a small fire. Engine 11 had it pretty much out and we just helped them finish it up. As we're working I can see some of the guys looking at me funny. Somehow some soot had magically formed a perfect Hitler mustache on my face.

How perfect is that?

Right when we cleared up from there, we got back to the station for about 30 minutes then headed off to give a presentation for about twenty 3 and 4 year olds. (Note to self: remember to take pictures at the next presentation) These kids were so wide eyed looking at the big red fire truck, one little girl kept blowing me kisses, and a handful of the moms their were fun to look at too, but hey, it's all about the kids. Had some off the hook chicken tacos for dinner, got a good workout in, and now at 11:05 it's about that time to hit the rack. I'm looking forward to the next 5 days off. (It's so easy for me to tell when you're jealous) I think I'll have plenty to write about.
