If Your Religion Didn’t Demand It

The help you give, the food you unwillingly provide,The love you show to thoseAgainst whom you secretly pass remarks snide.Fear makes you do this or duty.If your religion didn’t demand it, would you still do it?Afterlife is what worries you,An entry to heaven is what you crave. Not knowing, once you die, no one can torture you. You’re good and kind, but so obviously fake!If you truly believed God was watching, wouldn’t He know it?You breathe bothered only about where to live after you die.If you understood the irony, would you laugh at it?Why be hypocritical, when it’s easier to be honest? Why not be happy and truly alive – before you die?Why not let people be free to choose what they believe is best? Why not be genuinely kind if you felt like it?Tell me, if your religion taught you the truly good things, would you even believe it?PS: I wrote this poem about a year ago, but did not post it on my blog as I felt it might offend some people. However, considering that if we are to make our voices heard, then hiding behind shadows isn't an acceptable thing to do; I felt it was time to put it up. I must admit though that some stanzas from the original have been removed/edited.
