Image of the Day: The Portrait

When photographing a wedding, it's vital to keep in mind that I'm not only there to document the actual marriage, but the coming together of families and loved ones. From that perspective, it's important to make sure that those who are particularly dear to the bride and groom are photographed, too. I'm not really talking about the formal groups, although of course these can be covered if the clients wishes; but for me, it's more important to photograph those dear family members in an unobtrusive manner in order to capture their real character and charm.

At this beautiful wedding at Holbrook House, on the Somerset and Dorset border, I photographed this wonderful gentleman lost in thought as he listened to the wedding speeches. I'm always mindful to look out for the older generations at a wedding day. Events such as weddings, where the entire family is brought together, may happen infrequently - and it may well be that the next event that comes along, that particular individual may not be able to attend due to ill health or for other reasons.

So when our elder generations are present at our family gatherings and wedding days, let's celebrate the fact that they are there with us to share in the joy. For me, as a wedding photographer, it's my job to document those much loved people in a sensitive and flattering manner, and to provide the family with wonderful memories of the day that will live on forever in the minds and hearts of those who were there.
