Photographing Children at Weddings

I have chosen this image from a recent wedding at Symondsbury Manor, for several reasons.

Primarily it illustrates my style as documentary wedding photographer, with my preference to observe my subjects and await them to present the ‘moment’.  The image also serves as aportrait with almost all faces being captured in a natural manner as opposed to ‘smile for the camera’ situations.

These unnatural posed pictures will often lead to a very uncomfotable expression being presented to the photographer and render the image as ‘low grade’ in my opinion.  This capture records the moment with almost all eyes being transfixed on the computer screen.  Each child recorded naturally enjoying the day in ‘their’ own way.   It says more about the subjects as opposed to another contrived situation.

Photographing children at weddings can present many great photographic opportunities.  You can never anticipate what they will do, but you can keep an eye on them and see a situation that may well develop into a great photo opportunity.  Stealth is obviously key… well unless they are total exhibitionists and have no care in the world for observers with cameras!

This frame was taken during the wedding breakfast.  The younger ones had grown restless sitting at the table and had adjourned to the other end of the room where a computer and DVD had been set up.

Keeping their interests in mind with having various activities to hand can make the world of difference in having a great day, undisturbed by unhappy children.

I love the image for its natural portrait qualities, but also for the fact that the two children to the left are busy with their own thing, a playful squabble!
