“In my own little corner, in my own little chair, I can be whatever I want to be.”
It’s a little tune from Cinderella, and it’s what I think of whenever I’m in my little corner of the room, editing away, creating stuff. It’s just a little Target desk, a bookshelf full of how-to’s and essential wisdom for my research and my hobbies, and my iMac, which is capable of great magic.
My little desk did receive an upgrade this past weekend – a real life grown-up desk chair. I’ve had real offices at work {with real desk chairs, too} for the past twelve years, but for some reason, I always resisted putting effort into my home workspace. Even though I’ve dreamed of having a wonderful workspace, I never got around to creating one. It took selling our dining room table, along with several other pieces of furniture that won’t be going with us to Hawaii {so yes, we definitely took care of the 101 in 1001 goal to get rid of 20 things without replacing them!}, to get me to buy a real desk chair. My wonderful husband is hard at work making me a real life grown-up desk to go with it, and I’m beyond excited.
It’s partly because I always resisted the thought of bringing my work home with me. Who cared about working late? I’d work late at the office, usually being pretty productive when there was no one there to bother me, and go home after. Well, being married has definitely changed my feelings about that. I’d rather be home with my husband, even if that means I have to spend some of the time working and tossing the occasional cat out of my lap when little paws get too interested in playing with my keyboard, than be apart, even if it means the work comes home. The best part about doing more work at home is that I’ve learned when I’m away from the pressures of work, the more my creativity has come out. So now I’m feeling more like instead of bringing my work home, I’ve brought the comfort, ease, and creativity of home into my work.

P.S. I have to wish a happy belated birthday to my dad! Last year, Scott and I headed out to California to help him celebrate his 60th, and I wish we could do that again this year, but with so much summer travel and a move ahead of us, we just couldn’t make it work. However, we’re hoping to stop by and see my folks on the way. Seriously, I can’t believe the summer we have ahead of us!
