Warning: This workout was not with my trainer.
One day when I am wealthy beyond both of our wildest dreams, I will train 5 days a week with a personal trainer. Until then, I fly solo on some of my workouts.
In order to keep my body on it's toes and not just doing the same boring cardio every time I go to the gym...I decided to try something new.
Did I use a treadmill instead of an elliptical? Nope.
Did I Run intervals? Nope.
Did I Spin? Naw, that ain't me.
Did I venture onto the arm crank again? Heck no.
For some "doing cardio" is just a way to watch The Young & the Restless on the TV's without feeling guilty. Although watching Y&R while you slowly pedal on a recumbent bike IS much better than sitting on your arse at home not pedalling at all, in order to not be reprimanded by my trainer for being lame-I need to do something more. It should be noted here that if anyone ever wants to chat about Y&R-I am your gal.
So I did Sh'Bam. No. I attempted Sh'Bam.
What is Sh'Bam?
If you look up Sh'Bam in the dictionary is says:
Sh'bam:
The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search bar above.Merriam-Webster is telling me it doesn't exist. Then what did I just do for the last 45 minutes?
This.
I would like to say I looked more like Elaine from the episode of Seinfeld where she dances. All thumbs and kicks. (see "videos & youtube" for a clip). Because that would be funnier. Fine. But it wasn't that bad. "It's more like a full-body dry heave set to music." -George Costanza. Or maybe it was. I couldn't bring myself to look in the mirror very much. I was in the class with about 20 other ladies. Another note, if anyone ever wants to play "which Seinfeld character said that" I am also your gal for that.
Anyways, back to the class. We were all doing the exact same thing.
1. Trying not to laugh.
2. Checking around to see if anyone else was looking at us.
3. Standing frozen like a deer in the headlights when the instructor said "shake those hips like the sexy ladies you are"
Dance like no one it watching. This is probably pretty good advice if you are going to try Sh'Bam or for life in general. For the record. By the way, no one is watching you. Whether you are dancing your not. You are probably not that cool. At the end of the day, fitness can be simple. Whether its running, lifting weights or Sh'Bam. It's about doing something to get your body moving. Get your heart rate up. Sweat. Have fun. Some of the best fitness advice I ever got from a friend was so simple: "Eat less. Do more."
As for the class? I am glad I tried it. I think you should try everything once, especially with respect to fitness. Fitness should be fun and challenging. What better way then to keep your workouts fun and challenging then by trying something new? Also, I knew like 80% of the words to the songs, which was a major bonus and the actual moves were easy to follow. I plan to use at least 3 or 4 the next time I go out.
If you are going to try this class (or any dance class), I would recommend going with a friend or two. Make it a date. Or maybe your mom. I think it would be more fun that way.
There was one thing the instructor said that really summed up my Sh'Bam experience. She said "Spicy". I can't remember which track she said it during (although it was near the beginning). I can't remember why she said it or for which move she was referencing. But she said it. I feel like that is they best way to sum up my experience.
Spicy.
After all, don't they say variety is the spice of life?
Happy Reading,
