Growing up as a little girl, I have a distinct memory of watching, rewinding, and re-watching Wizard of Oz over and over and over again. There was just something special about that sweet story of a Midwestern girl stuck in a whimsical world trying to make her way back home (I’m pretty sure the sparkly ruby red shoes also had something to do with it to).
Despite my deep love for the movie, my Dad has always hated it. The flying monkeys and the witches and the munchkins gave him the heebie-jeebies (don’t worry munchkins, you are in good company—my Dad hates clowns too). While it made me sad as a child that he hated one of my favorite movies, it actually worked well in my favor this weekend. Funny how becoming an adult just flips things on their head.
My Mom bought tickets to see Wicked (the Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch’s perspective) this past weekend in Baltimore. Knowing my Dad’s hatred of all things wizardly, she asked him if he wanted to go. No one was shocked when he declined.
So my Mom knowing my love of Oz asked me if I would take his place. And of course I jumped at the chance. I had seen Wicked in 2010 and had been dying to see it again ever since.
So last Sunday, I hopped in a car with my Mom and my Aunt and Uncle (who have season tickets to the Hippodrome in Baltimore—pretty artsy people, huh) to see one of my favorite musicals.
Since we were headed to the early afternoon performance, we decided to grab lunch beforehand at a cute Mexican joint across the street from the Hippodrome, Salsarita’s.
Where I scarfed down this delicious veggie burrito bowl and chips. Definitely going to try to find one of these around us. It’s like Chipotle but with more options.
Once our bellies were full, we headed across the street to the Hippodrome to grab our seats for the show.
I spent the rest of the time taking a million pictures and professing my love of this musical to my Mom. She had never seen it before but I knew she would love the music and the political themes and the witty references. We both enjoy a good pun—and ironically enough a good blonde joke.
It was great spending the afternoon with her and getting to talk about broadway shows again. It’s been so long since my last show.
Luckily this show didn’t disappoint. It was just as funny and magical and clever as I remembered. And this cast, although different from the last one, did a great job. So if you are in Baltimore, make sure to check out Wicked while it’s still here. It gets my and Momma Adams’ seal of approval.
After the show, I made my way back home to Old Town to see the hubby for the first time that day (he was sleeping when I left). And wouldn’t you know, he found a way to surprise me.
We have been going through a super rough time house hunting lately and he just wanted to brighten up my day with some flowers. He said he got the pink ones because they were like my wedding bouquet—too cute.
So I guess all in all, you can say I had a fantastic Sunday with some of my favorite people watching one of my favorite shows capped off with an unexpected gift from my favorite boy. It’s days like these that make me so grateful for my family. Thanks again for the tickets Mom!
