…Keep It To Yourself

With only three days to go until the Hamilton…I mean the Tony Awards, I’d like to divert your attention to theater on the other side of the pond.

Yes, that’s right, there’s other theater in the world outside of the Richard Rodgers Theater. Although I can’t blame you for being completely absorbed by the impending Hamilton…sorry again…I mean the Tony Awards.

As some of you may already know, this week saw the first preview performances of JK Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II” in London’s West End. Which is really exciting for those get to go and see it now, and really nerve-racking for those of us who would like to see it before social media has divulged every last plot point.

Thankfully, Rowling herself has started a Twitter campaign to guilt any potential spoilers from leaking every detail on to the Internet. There are even hashtags — #KeepTheSecrets and #Don’tBeWormtail.

While I’m certain the guilt of knowing that JK Rowling herself will personally be disappointed in you if you spoil the story for the rest of us is enough to deter some from ruining the fun. I’d like to take a moment to add my own two cents.

First of all, congratulations on being one of the first to see the new Harry Potter plays, that’s really cool. I imagine it was just as exciting as getting to read a new Harry Potter book, something that you may have thought would never happen again.

Imagine how different your life would be if every time a new Harry Potter book had come out, the salesperson had told you in great detail just how great the new book was. That wouldn’t have been very fun. Don’t be that hypothetical salesperson.

Just to be clear, it’s fine if you want to tweet, Instagram, and post to your heart’s content (#CursedChild). Just keep it generic. I’d love to hear about how it’s “magical,” but that’s about as specific as I want.

I realize that some people don’t mind spoilers. Some even seek them out, and I respect that. But I’d appreciate it if you’d return that respect, and keep your mouth shut and your Twitter account mute.

And on that note, I’ll leave you to your Hamilton…funny how that keeps happening…I mean Tony Awards preparations.
