Kit out Your New Home the Right Way

Posted on the 20 February 2014 by Sparklesandstretchmarks @raine_fairy

When moving house, we often picture how our new home is going to look like when it’s finished. You want each room to have its own unique character and so you need to find the perfect colours, floors, shades and furniture to create it. Here you will find the ultimate guide to kitting out your new home just the way you want it.
Researching
Rule number one – research, research and research some more! If you have a particular piece of furniture or color scheme in mind and you have your heart set on it, then nothing else will do. If you have to use some patience and wait for the right piece to come along, then that is always preferable to having something you don’t really like as much. You can always find great offers on the internet, whether you are looking for antique dressers or sofas on sale.
ColoursThis is a vital component when planning to decorate your home. You need to look at each room individually and see which color schemes look best. Many new homeowners are tempted to paint everything white for a ‘blank canvas’ to work from and sometimes this looks great. However, it can end up making your house look bland so try and mix it up with some bold colours or floral shades in a couple of rooms.
Modern vs. Traditional
You should decide whether you want your home to look contemporary or vintage before you start. There are some designers who can pull off mixing the two but if you’re not too sure, it is best to stick with just one. Remember, modern doesn’t necessarily mean minimalist and traditional doesn’t have to mean clutter everywhere. Balance your look with your own personal tastes to find the perfect look for you.
DonationsIf you are a first-time buyer, you may find that you have more donations from friends or relatives than those who are already on the ladder but this can be a serious bonus. People will often look to unload furniture onto family members or friends when they update their own look and you could end up with some amazing bargains as a result. When moving home, it is always worth asking around to see if anyone you know is thinking of parting with any old furniture or home décor.
DeterminationWith all the hustle and bustle of moving house, decorating might be the last thing on your mind. The key here is perseverance – don’t be too hard on yourself straight away but make sure you get things done. Having a checklist of things to do such as painting or researching online, which will help you stay motivated and you’ll be less likely to start a job and then abandon it halfwaythrough. And if you are really struggling for motivation, why not invite your friends around for a painting party to help you out? Stick on some music, break out the paint brushes and have fun while you work. You could even have a bottle of wine ready in the fridge as a thank you for when the work is done.
