…Kramp Your Style

Happy Krampusnacht! Although, to be honest there’s nothing happy about it.

For those unfamiliar with the Krampusnacht, or Krampus Night, tradition, you’re in for a terrifying treat.

If you’re anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Feast of St. Nicholas tomorrow, let’s just say it’s no coincidence that Krampus arrives the day before Jolly, Old St. Nick.

Krampus, the bad cop to St. Nicholas’s good cop, clears the way for Saint Nick. In charge of punishing the bad little boys and girls, this half-goat, half-demon creature was downright terrifying. His punishments involved kidnapping, drowning, and/or eating. It makes coal in your stocking sound like a gift. Not surprisingly, there’s also a strong tradition of alcohol associated with the holiday too.

You’ll be happy to know that modern versions of Krampus have become far less frightening. He’s picked up some less frightening tactics from Santa, and now dispenses coal. He may still be the bad guy to St. Nick’s, well saintliness, but isn’t it nice to know that those who engage in bad behavior are still held accountable…sometimes.

…just for fun:
