Lalla Essaydi at the National Museum of African Art

A “Favorites” Update!  (I haven’t done one of these in a while.)

I saw a really fascinating exhibit today, at the Museum of African Art (one of the Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C.)  The artist was a Moroccan-born woman named Lalla Essaydi.  She used textiles and henna, and placed her subjects in a harem setting, to call attention to the ways women (particularly women of her culture) have been limited.

It was really fascinating.  I couldn’t take pictures – but luckily the museum has a nice write-up with lots of photos.

Here’s the link to that.

The exhibit runs through February 24th.  If you have the chance to view it, I highly recommend it!  (The pictures on the website, while nice, don’t in any way do it justice.)
