If you're considering booking last minute cruises, you'll have plenty of destinations to choose from. Chances are you'll be in Athens at some point. The Acropolis is busy, noisy and not particularly well run, but it's still the Acropolis. You'd be a fool to miss out. The museum, located on the same site, is also worth a trip. Akrotiri The ancient site of Aktrotiri is situated on the island of Santorini. It will not feature on many to-do lists, as it has been closed for a number of years. Now triumphantly reopened, it's an astonishing site that has been likened by many to Pompeii, owing to the fact that it, too, was destroyed by a volcano. However, it's 2,000 years older than the Italian city, a realisation that will cause you to gaze in wonder at the sophistication of this ancient culture. Knossos If you've grown up with the Greek myths, Knossos, on Crete, is a must-see. Forget the faded archaeological splendour and focus on the legends. This is the land of Theseus and the Minotaur, of Ariadne and her ball of string; and of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun. A word of warning: it's worth picking up a guidebook before you head there. As befits the legend, the site gives new meaning to the word labyrinthine. Katakolon This pretty port town will be overrun in the summer, for the simple reason that it's forty minutes away from Olympia; the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Book a guided tour and imagine Greek and Roman athletes vying for glory on the racing track. Grandmasters Palace In Greece, a medieval castle seems somehow less impressive. Surely it should be older? Don't be fooled. The Grandmasters Palace, home to the Knights Hospitaller and located on the island of Rhodes, is a spectacular fortress, now partially reconstructed.
