Friday’s Quotes for the Chicks
I know, it was another week where I didn’t post every day but things are starting to settle down and so I should be getting back to my regular schedule.
First, today’s quote of the day. The weather has turned and there is a snap to it in the morning and the leaves are just starting to change. Apples are in season and in the evening you can smell wood stoves that are shaking off their sides, getting ready for the winter.
Fall is clearly one of the best reasons to live in New Hampshire.
Apple, peach, pear, plum
“Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn.”
Elizabeth Lawrence
And speaking of apples. This is an apple pie. No it’s not mine (this weekend, I’ll try to see if I can overcome my paralyzing fear about this whole adventure) this is a pie from Mrs. Currier. If you live in my town, you know about the Currier apple orchard. It’s only the best place in the world to get apples, and apple pie, and apple butter, and apple cider jelly, and pumpkin butter, and cider, and local honey (I’m sure there’s more that I’ve missed but these are our absolute favorites.)
Mrs. Currier’s fantastic apple pie
Every single one of my kids has gone on a field trip to the orchard and until we discovered a lethal bee sting (including yellow jacket) allergy, we used to bring the entire family to go apple picking.
If you go early in the season, you can grab one of Mrs. Currier’s pies. O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! Boy do we love her pies.
But here’s the best thing about the orchard. This weekend I stopped by on my way home to get apples, jellies, honey, and of course a pie. I lined everything up on the counter and it was only then I realized that they didn’t take debit cards. I didn’t have cash or a check with me.
“Oh boy, I’m really sorry,” I said. “Can you just set them aside and I’ll come back with a check?”
“No problem. Just pop the check in the mail when you get a chance.” She said as she bagged my purchases.
Can you imagine? That’s the way a local business should be run, with trust of your neighbors and heaping dose of understanding.
I sent Trevor over with a check as soon as I got home. He told me that while he was waiting to give Mrs. Currier the check, she told the person at the counter to go get a few extra apples because “this bag looks a little sparse.”
You better believe that Currier orchards will have my undying support and business for all time. Decent people with a decent sense of how to treat people – that’s the way to do it.
There are some really nice people in this world. I don’t know, the pie that night – just seemed to taste a little sweeter.
See you next week.

As always, happy weekend everyone, health and happiness (and safety) to your flock.
