I am by no means a prude, but as I find myself re-watching some of the footage from the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) from the other night, I am thoroughly disgusted.
I have been a long-time fan of the VMA’s. It is the awards show that garners the most controversy and outrageous fashion. Besides that – it is music, music, music, and that is my thing.
This year, I watched the show with my pre-teen daughter, who clung to every word of her rock idols just as I had throughout my life. She was hooked, and as a parent, I realized a little too late that show should have come with a warning. This year, MTV crossed the line. It took outrageous and controversial to an extreme I haven’t seen in previous years.
First there was Miley Cyrus, who hosted the show. MTV’s choice in using her was obviously for ratings, but man – please have a little social responsibility. Do I think she should be censored? Heck no! I just don’t think they should have chosen someone who wore straps thinner than a spaghetti noodle to cover her nipples for all of the teenage audience to see.
Then, there was Kanye’s manifesto, which was supposed to be inspirational for this younger set. Kanye, here’s a tip for you – if you want to run for presidency in 2020, maybe you shouldn’t advertise smoking a doobie before the show “to take the edge off” or slugging down half a bottle of Henessey either. Your young audience shouldn’t think that drugs and alcohol are cool, and neither should your daughter, for that matter, who you mentioned throughout your anti-awards show speech. (Gee – what did you do with that Michael Jackson Video Vangard Award anyways, “bro?”)
On to Nikki Manaj…Uggghhhhh….don’t even get me started! Picking a fight on national TV and calling Miley a bitch just made my stomach turn. I’m trying to teach my kids about conflict resolution, and Nikki and Miley are setting the example of nasty cat fight.
Sorry MTV, lighten up a bit. This……

….is simply not okay. The worst part is that Miley’s hosting seems to be chosen for stirring up drama when she did this…..

Enough is enough. I never thought I’d say this, but it all makes Madonna seem tame. Controversy is okay, but don’t lose sight that your audience is comprised of teens who have parents. You wouldn’t want us putting the parent controls on MTV now would you? Keep it going, MTV, and you might end up losing. I just hope it isn’t too late.
