These days, it seems as if the planet is under threat from all sides. Problems like deforestation, pollution, carbon emissions and the loss of endangered species can seem too big for one person to do anything about. But this isn't true. Everyone can do their part to help save the planet, and if we all do our little bit, then our combined efforts can have a huge impact. This article covers a few simple everyday things you can do to help reduce your impact on the environment. If you are looking for more ideas about how you can help save the planet, check out http://www.australiansolarquotes.com.au/ for some more great ideas.

Save water

Saving water is easy; changing your old habits just a little bit can make a huge difference to the amount of water you use. Start with the simple things like taking shorter showers with a water saving shower head (four minute showers should be your goal) and not leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth. Investing in a water tank to catch rain to use for the garden is well worth it and installing an efficient slow drip underground watering system can keep your garden looking green and healthy all year round with the minimal amount of water. Also, wash your car with a high pressure cleaner instead of a hose.

Recycle

Recycling your household rubbish is easier than ever these days, with most local councils providing recycling bins. Be sure to separate your garbage as you dispose of it, and use all those vegetable scraps to start a compost heap. You can also recycle your old mobile phones, car batteries, TV's and computer equipment and ask your local council or environmental group about the other recycling options in your area; you'd be surprised just how much of your household waste can be recycled rather than being sent to landfill.

Reduce electricity use

This means making sure you turn off lights when you aren’t using them and turn off your appliances at the outlet to make sure they are not needlessly wasting energy while in standby mode. Buy the most energy efficient appliances you can afford. This will not only save you money off your electricity bill, it will reduce the amount of fossil fuels burned to create the electricity they use. Install solar panels and a solar hot water heater, the upfront cost will soon be paid back through the savings on your power bill.

Reduce fuel use

Drive the most efficient car you can afford and avoid driving if you can easily walk, ride a bike, or catch public transport. Make an effort to combine all you errands into one journey; drive smoothly and evenly, and keep the correct air pressure in your tires to minimise your car's fuel consumption.

Say no to plastic packaging

Plastic packaging is the bane of the environment and you should avoid using it wherever possible. Take a re-usable cup or containers when you get takeaway coffee or meals. Always carry your re-usable shopping bags in the car and put a reminder on you shopping list or car keys to make sure you take them into the store with you. So don't be overwhelmed; start using these simple tips in your life, encourage your friends and family to do the same, and together we can help save the planet.
