Today, the release of a new comic book movie trailer will inevitably shut down an afternoon’s worth of productivity while soaring up the trending lists on Twitter and beyond, but it wasn’t long ago that this level of enthusiasm and fandom was marginalized and kept on the outer edges of pop culture.
Even then, in a time before Comic-Con, one groundbreaking fandom boldly went where no fans had gone before…
The Trekkies.
Today, the “Star Trek” franchise celebrates 50 years—five decades undoubtedly made possible by the incredible devotion of its fans.
Since the launch of its mission in 1966, the story has become so much more than just a television show, and its fan base is a beautiful testament to that.
Not only that, the Trekkies paved the way for “nerd culture” in more ways than I can count, so I’ll simply say this: On behalf of all of the Potterheads, Whovians, Ringers, Thronies, Gleeks, and countless other fandoms, thank you, Trekkies. Thank you.
…bi-daily smile…
