Live To Rise: Fighting Depression With Music

Posted on the 04 September 2017 by Scribe Project @ascribeproject

On April 5th, 1994 tragedy struck many with the death of Kurt Cobain. At the age of 27, the leading man of Nirvana
was more than a singer—he was the voice of a generation, speaking to the hearts and minds of many budding artists and
music lovers.

He would have been 50 years old this year.

While the passing of Cobain still rests heavily in the memories of many fans, 2017 has delivered another rapid
succession of blows with the deaths of Chris Cornell, known as the leading man of Soundgarden and Audioslave—but
also a solo vocal force to be reckoned with, and Chester Bennington, the iconic frontman of Linkin Park who made it
clear that his voice was as versatile as any instrument.

Suicide being the unpleasant commonality of these artistes’ passing inspired local music scene enthusiast Hailey
Hernandez to reach out her friends and local bands to work towards a concert that would not only celebrate the lives and
accomplishments of these fallen idols, but also remind fans that regardless of the recent tragedies, their music still lived
on.

“The reality of suicide is becoming scarier every year, with numbers having almost doubled now than what they were
15 years ago. Regardless whether a large number of this can be attributed to depression, or to stress, what matters is that
there just isn’t enough awareness about what’s happening and how serious a matter this is.”

Teaming-up with, The Fandom Menace, a collective of individuals with a shared interest in promoting local talent, Live
To Rise: Remembering Our Heroes was conceptualised as a concert that would not only celebrate the achievements of
these late musical icons, but also shed the spotlight on Singaporean bands.

“With Live to Rise, we’re hoping to reach out to those who identify or relate to these celebrities who have recently
passed and we hope to remind them that their music remains with us. Additionally, all the proceeds gathered from this
event will be donated to an organisation devoted to suicide prevention,” says Ryan Mennen, member of The Fandom
Menace.

Partnered with Lepark, the restaurant’s private concert space will host the event on the 8th of September, two days prior
to World Suicide Prevention Day, and feature five local bands performing a mix of songs from the discographies of
Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, and/or Chester Bennington, along with original tracks.
Tickets can be purchased at $5 ($5.65 with Stripe surcharge) from ticketing sponsor Ticketbox @
www.ticketbox.sg/live-to-rise or at the door.

Performing bands include: Tell Lie Vision, Gilded Edge, The Groove Gurus, Knightingale, and Catalogue V.
Live to Rise is sponsored by the great people at The Music Parlour, Ticketbox, BCUBE, and the Singapore Pub Crawl,
and with the support of location partner Lepark and media partner Justsaying.Asia.
