My first week in Sonoma, I did an internet search of wineries to visit in the area. I read a few lists of top wineries to visit, favorite wineries and more. It was my “starting” point. That is when Matanzas Creek first caught my eye.
Then, as the weeks progressed, I found myself driving by this winery often as we were running errands, exploring back roads, etc. It was becoming the winery I had to stop into.
Well that day finally came a little over two weeks ago. I made an outing for myself. I explored the beautiful area of Calistoga in the morning, and by afternoon, I stopped into Matanzas Creek, and boy, I was SOOO happy that I did.
When you first arrive, you are drawn in the beautiful outdoor setting. Driving on a long stretch of road before arriving at the winery along Bennet Valley. Taking in the vineyards. You get out and just want to walk around at first by the beautiful outdoor setting. In the spring, they have a gorgeous lavender field that will greet you warmly. Can’t wait to see this with my own eyes.
Matanzas Creek Winery is apart of the Jackson Family Wines which allows the winery to grow the grapes in the right climates for that particular grape making for some spectacular wine, however, the true magic lies in the hands of the winemaker.
And… by first taste you can truly tell how Matanzas Creek stands out from the rest:
Once inside the tasting room you have two flight choices to choose from. A 10 Dollar flight and also a 15 dollar flight. And then your “Journey” begins… and quite fitting since they have their more elegant “Journey” wine collection that is a pleasant taste. If given the chance to try the Journey varietals, please do. They are well worth it.
Matanzas Creek stands out for their Sauvignon Blancs, but the true surprise for me was with their Merlots. For those that know me, know that I rarely recommend a Merlot nor do I usually find one I like, but after trying both Merlot varietals at Matanzas Creek, I have found a Merlot I truly like. But not only that, every wine I tried at Matanzas Creek was a wine that fit my palette. That is very RARE for me.
But… it doesn’t stop there. Matanzas Creek also has a food and wine pairing offering for 25 dollars. An experience, if you have the extra time to take, do. With the tasting room manager and wine club coordinator having years of knowledge and experience in the wine industry, your tasting experience will truly be just that, an experience.
Matanzas Creek has an annual event called “Days of Wine and Lavender.” A great time to visit the Estate and take in the wine and beautiful lavender field.
