For
children, and the young at heart for that matter, a holiday is as much about
the accommodation you stay in as the destination itself. After all, you can
sleep in your comfy beds, surrounded by four walls for the rest of the year.
So, when it comes to holidays, much of the fun comes from staying somewhere
completely different. Here are just a few of the places you might want to look
at for this year’s summer break.
Indoor camping in Berlin

This one
made the list simply because it’s so off the wall – or should that be within
the walls? The HuettenPalast indoor caravan park provides a
camping experience without having to worry about the vagaries of the weather.
The site, in a converted vacuum cleaner factory, has indoor caravans and wooden
cabins rather than conventional hotel rooms.
On a raft in Belgium

If you’ve
always fancied staying in one of those water bungalows in the Maldives, but
your budget doesn’t quite stretch to such luxury, these tents
may be a purse – and family – friendly alternative. The camping rafts are tied
up, so there’s no danger of floating away in the middle of the night. And, your
raft comes with a canoe so you can head off with your brood to explore the
river.
With the lions in France

You don’t
have to go to Africa to go on safari. The Cerza Safari lodge, just across the channel in Normandy, has two-storey wooden
wigwams, dubbed zoobservatories, where you can see what the lions and zebras
are up to without even having to leave your accommodation. Because the steps up
to the mezzanine level are so steep though, your little ones may well have to
stay on the sofa bed in the living room, unless you’re traveling with older
children.
A caravan in Cornwall

Many people have lots of fond childhood memories of caravan
trips with their parents. So, when you have your own children, it’s fun to
relive those days. Parkdean’s Newquay site is a good one to put on the holiday
wishlist for this season as it’s got good kids entertainment run by their Troopers and Sid and Lizzie. With the Star Landers club for
younger kids and the Freestyle Teens Club, so you know your children won’t be
short of friends during their stay. You can take surfing lessons together in
Newquay’s famous waves or just enjoy time together in the caravan playing board
games, cooking produce you pick up in local markets and chatting about your
day.
For wannabe Fireman Sams

Just like
staying in a little caravan, but with a child-friendly twist. The Eco Lodge
Brejeira campsite in Silves on the Algarve, Portugal, has turned what was once
an ambulance for the fire brigade into a little campervan. You can choose to put it next to
the yurt or the gypsy van so the kids have their own little sleeping area while
you have some grown-up space. The site is all about experiencing nature and
spending time together as a family.
That’s
really what any holiday is about, no matter whether you choose a caravan, tent
or something quirkier – spending time together away from the stresses of
everyday life.
