US Air Force Captain Virgil Hilts sat on the bunk, trying to remember the events which had landed him in the jail cell.
It wasn’t too tough for him to figure out the answer to this one. He had a reputation in all the German POW camps in the area for being finicky when it came to spending more than a few days in prison. He irritated all the guards and German officers with his frequent escape attempts and his irreverent behavior.
Little did they know that his latest attempt was a reconnaissance mission to enable The Great Escape plan.

This post is a tribute to the memorable character of Capt. Virgil Hilts in the movie, The Great Escape played wonderfully well by Steve McQueen. This character remains one of my childhood and all time favorite characters in movies. Memories of him with his baseball and his glove still bring a smile to my face.
