Minnesota State Fair 2013... the Year of Sweltering Heat

Posted on the 01 September 2013 by Homesmsp @HomesMSP

Wouldn't you know the day we set aside for a visit to the State Fair with family from Connecticut and New York City who had never been to the fair before was during a record-breaking heat wave! Brave souls that they are, they decided they still wanted to give it a try.

The first thing that hit me when we arrived Monday afternoon (in addition to the heat) was that the streets were pretty empty... meaning we didn't have to wait in line for anything! We only lasted about a couple hours, but we saw things I haven't seen for awhile. They thought it must be cool where the butter sculptures were being made... unfortunately, not for the viewers so we moved on to sample some food...

I don't often visit the agriculture building, but our daughter-in-law said the honey sunflower ice cream there is one of her regular stops so we headed over and saw some interesting seed art along the way...

Top on our visitors' food list to try were the new 'dough-sants' at French Meadow Bakery... called 'cro-nuts' in their neck of the woods in New York City. They got rave reviews. The steaming cold 'comet corn' at Blue Moon Dine-In Theater looked cool, but the taste was nothing special. The 'craft beer battered onion rings' at Ball Park Cafe were an all-around hit.

With what sounds like gorgeous weather for the last two days, I wonder if they will break attendance records as people who were baked out earlier come to experience all that is the Minnesota State Fair before it is gone for another year...
