Monster ABC – Fun Educational App for Ages 5+

Posted on the 21 March 2014 by Meltingmoments

I love finding great new apps and this one wasn’t difficult to find as it’s by a company whose apps I am a huge fan of already, Wonderkind. (My reviews of the Wonderkind Toddler Seek and Find Apps are here and here)

Monster ABC is aimed for school aged children of 5 and up. It has been developed with beginning readers in mind.

As with all Wonderkind apps, the illustrations are beautifully hand drawn and instantly engaging with bright colours and cute characters.

The game requires the player to line up the dials and match the initial sound to the corresponding picture. When it’s answered correctly, the word and letter is said aloud. Points are collected to unlock monsters and advance  through to the higher, more challenging modes of the game. Dora and I unlocked Olga. She’s a bit cute!

The more your child practices, the more monsters and coins collected.

Within the app is a Parent’s Corner, where you can read about the literacy skills taught and practiced in the game. It gives you tips for teaching your child word attack skills to improve his or her phonemic awareness. You can also download and print an graphic ‘Sound Table’ to display at home.

While this app is still a bit advanced for Dora, I think it’s a great, fun way to practice and consolidate reading skills for beginning and emergent readers.

Keep an eye on the Melting Moments Facebook page to win a promo code for this game.
