The history of Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday, began in the Middle Ages when it was considered quite normal for children as young as 10 years old to leave home to work. It was decided those who had moved away from their hometowns were allowed to return to visit their home or “mother” churches, and their mothers once a year.
This special occasion took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and allowed families to reunite for a short while. Today, Mothering Sunday is commonly referred to as “Mother’s Day” in the UK.
Here, we outline some gift suggestions to show your Mum how much she means to you.
A piece of jewellery
Many women appreciate gifts they can treasure for years to come like a keepsake or an item of jewelry. A piece of luxurious jewellery such as a diamond necklace or bracelet is sure to make her feel special, and every time she wears it she’ll think of you.
Flowers
As Jennifer Aniston’s character said in The Break Up, “Every girl like flowers!” Treat your Mum to a bouquet of her favorite flowers and she’s bound to be delighted. However, if you’d prefer to get her a longer lasting gift, why not go a step further and organize a flower subscription for her?
Scents
It’s no secret that women love things that smell good. An aromatherapy diffuser will make a lovely gift your Mum can use again and again, and with a wide range of scents to choose from, she can switch up the fragrance to suit her mood or the occasion.
Another scent-based present that will always go down well is perfume. A classic gift for everything from a birthday to an anniversary, if she has a favorite perfume, you can’t go wrong by splashing out on a bottle.
A champagne afternoon tea
If your Mum insists she doesn’t want a gift, why not treat her to an experience instead? Take her out for champagne afternoon tea and enjoy catching up over bite-sized sandwiches, scones and cakes or book a spa trip for two and spend the day getting pampered together.
Doing something a bit different from your usual activities will help make the day more exciting and memorable for her, and it will allow you to spend time with each other, which is what Mother’s Day is all about.
