My Christian Mingle Rant.

Posted on the 01 February 2012 by Shayes @shayes08
I'm gonna be honest. Online dating still kind of weirds me out. I understand that it's becoming much more socially acceptable with how attached our generation and culture has become to the internet. Apparently 33% of people have met their spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend online. I understand that, in a lot of ways, it's becoming the norm. It's not longer weird to say you met your significant other online. But it still kind of weirds me out, but nothing more than that. Except one.
ChristianMingle.com pisses me off.
You might find this a somewhat ironic statement. I'm a Christian, right? Well, yes. And I'm single, right? Well, yes. So why do I have a problem with ChristianMingle.com? Wouldn't it be a great way for me to meet a great Christian guy without having to wade through a bunch of awkward requests from non-Christians on the other dating sites? Well, theoretically, yes. But it still pisses me off.
Why?
Let me give a little bit of background for you all.
I didn't always hate strongly dislike Christian Mingle. I mean, I thought it was a little bit ridiculous. In fact, I think all of the niche dating sites are ridiculous. I didn't think Christian Mingle was any more ridiculous than the other ones. I just thought it was a bit ridiculous. If you want to meet a great Christian guy or girl, then I think it's better to get involved in a local church and see that they're a great Christian guy/girl rather than meet them online and hear them say they're a great Christian guy/girl. But that's just my opinion. To each their own.
And then I saw it.
I was looking up lyrics for some song and on the sidebar was an ad for Christian Mingle. And in that moment my thoughts about Christian Mingle changed from "It's a little bit ridiculous" to "I hate strongly dislike that site."
Why? Because of this...
My Christian Mingle Rant.
That's a screenshot of the top of the Christian Mingle homepage. I think the slogan "Find God's Match for You" is a bit cliche, but that's not the issue. The issue I have is the verse below it. (Nevermind the fact that I just noticed that they wrote "Psalms" when it should be "Psalm.)
I remember the first time I read this verse as a kid. I thought, "This is awesome! So as long as I follow Jesus, He'll give me whatever I want!" Right? Wrong.
That's the Prosperity Gospel and it's completely unBiblical.
I also remember the first time I read Psalm 37:4 and realized what it actually means.
The words of Psalm 37:4 are quite possibly one of the most common verses to take out of context. I've heard it thrown all over the place in my years and at least 75% of the time people use it in the Prosperity Gospel context, and I'm sorry, but that's wrong.
So what does Psalm 37:4 mean? If it's not saying that God will give me whatever I want when I delight myself in Him, what does it mean?
Well, it does mean that God will give you what you want when you delight yourself in Him.
Wait...what? I thought you just said...
But there's a catch. See, there's this funny thing that happens when you decide to follow Jesus and you delight yourself in Him each and every day. It's called transformation.
So God does gives you exactly what you want when you delight yourself in Him. But that's because when you delight yourself in Him, His desires for you become your desires for you. Funny how that works, huh?
I'm all for Christian men dating and marrying Christian women. I think there needs to be more couples who are pursuing a Biblical picture of marriage in this country and the world. But I am not okay with a company using Scripture out of context and misleading people into believing that if they delight themselves in the Lord, He will bring them a spouse. That's just not Biblical. It's false advertising and it's wrong.
I have no desire whatsoever to use any online dating site. Maybe if I'm 35 and still single, but I've got 12 years before that happens. But I can say without a doubt, that if I ever do, I will not go to Christian Mingle.
</end rant>
