I waited a long time for my daughters to get along as famously as they do now.
It took years and Emma feeling comfortable in her high school for her to finally come around and befriend her sister as well as share genetic material with her sister.
This Saturday is Emma’s formal and Katherine will be returning for Spring Semester at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, a location three thousand miles from the rest of us. The good news for Emma is she will be here for formal prep.
They are getting their hair cut and colored together on Thursday. They are going to go shopping for ultimate girly things on either Wednesday or Friday. I imagine on Saturday, Katherine may help Emma and her friends as they get ready for the formal in Emma’s room. The dressing, the makeup, the shoes, the hair, the giggles, the making memories will all be here in our house.
Emma said, “I have to get nail polish to go with my dress,” and Katherine commented back, “I love shopping for nail polish!” To me, shopping for nail polish with my ultra choosy daughter would be right up there with a root canal.
Thankfully since older sister will be here, I am able to bow out in terms of shopping and allow the girls to continue to grow into their blooming relationship.
Katherine’s friends always had formal prep at another young woman’s house, so I am delighted to be hosting this event. Plus it gives Katherine a final chance to be close friend AND older sister, all rolled into one. Emma is able to be proud of her sister now and readily accepts praise from her sister.
She has found her way.
Katherine never lost her way.
I love watching them leave the house together, driving off in a car while I stay in my home office and get my daily tasks done.
My prayer is all my children stay in deep love with each other, now and throughout their adulthood. My intention is to continue to nurture their laughter, their connection and their ability to understand one another.
