My Guest Bedroom Cost Me $0.

Posted on the 15 March 2013 by Mikidemann @mikidemann
I have this awesome friend. Her name is Kjerstin and her fiancé's name is Shane. Kjerstin and I have been friends for a really long time. After high school she moved a few hours away from me. We still are great friends we just don't get to see each other as often. She has been up here a lot more lately because she is getting married, and her wedding will be up by me! HOORAY! So Kjerstin text me the other night and said she was coming up and since we don't have roommates anymore I am always begging here to come up and stay with me! She FINALLY agreed to stay at my house for this whole weekend! I am really so beyond excited to have company over for the weekend. I've always dreamt over grown up slumber parties (get yo' mind outta the gutta!)

As soon as I stopped squealing from excitement. I realized our guest bedroom has zilch-nada-nothing in it. It is a big room with a walk-out door to the backyard and it's own bathroom. The room had potential, but before last night it had 4 walls and carpet. That's it. I started to brain storm about how in the world I was going to make this a guest bedroom. See in my head when I get an idea it can't not work. I will make it happen. I wanted them to feel like they were staying in a guest bedroom not just thrown in an extra room. I wanted them to want to stay with us again. We've been very tight on money the past few months, because we went crazy paid down some credit cards, bought laptops and, of course, Indie. Jared's idea was to grab an air mattress and blow it up. I HATE air mattresses! They are so uncomfortable even the most plush wonderful air mattress will make you miserable after sleeping on it for an hour. The second idea was to have them stay on the couch. Not going to happen. I want them to have a room for the weekend. Not sleeping head to toe on a couch. That couldn't be more lame!
Plan C was to try and find a mattress or bed that someone was giving away and we could go pick up. It would be a headache and we'd have to borrow a truck, but it was an idea. The other downside is that if this isn't from a family member or close friend chances are it's not the most clean. I posted on Facebook and got a few hits, but after really thinking about it. I didn't think that is what I wanted. I didn't want to spend money I don't have right now on a cheap bed and then be stuck with trying to get rid of it in a few months when I am ready to actually decorate this room. Next I started to think that a futon is a long term solution, because I originally wanted this room to be an office, so it could have dual purposes. The bad news is even at ikea the cheapest futon was $129 and that is a CHEAP futon. Which then counteracts the idea of it being a long term piece of furniture.

Side note: I really love Jared on nights like last night. While I was trying to figure all of this out. He is so beyond patient with me. I can get pretty irrational and stuck in my way. He never acts like I am overreacting or being annoying, which I most definitely am being both. He really just listens and lets me brainstorm. Then when I decide what will work he helps me carry out my vision. That's true love. It's all about support!
BING!  A bright light went off. My parents have a nice futon that my dad had at an old office space. It was probably there for about 6 months to a year. Of course, it's never been slept on and maybe sat on only a handful of times. After he moved offices, they brought it home and it's been in their basement collecting dust. Around 10pm I called my mom as we were already driving to let her know my plan. Thank heavens my parents live close and they seem to love me enough to take loans out on their furniture. We drove over to their house and crammed a futon into my Scion TC. That was a comedic nightmare. After a lot of tetris-ing the cushions and frame we ended up driving with the trunk wide open and bungee cords making a little protective net. (ghetto!) We took back roads home and had my emergency lights flashing the whole time. Luckily, we made it! We unloaded the futon and carried it around back through the guest bedroom outside door.  It made it into the perfect bed for the guest bedroom! We had a few pillow top foam mattresses that Jared and I use when we go camping, we put those on top of the futon for added comfort, put some sheets on the baby and it is ready for some sleepin' action!
I grabbed a rug from an upstairs room and brought it down to add some coziness. We had no type of TV stand laying around and so we went with the eclectic feel and used a guitar amp. That's right, we had nothing and I was out of ideas and then Jared shows up with one of his amps. It worked out just perfect. Jared has a TV that he uses when he works out, his work out routine is Monday - Thursday so he never uses it over the weekend. We grabbed the TV and put it on the amp - and BAM it turned out way better than I imagined!
I know it's only temporary, but wouldn't you feel at home in this room?
